W.F. Bullen was the President of B.C. Marine Railway Company (Esquimalt, B.C.) established in 1893 and sold to Yarrows Ltd. in 1914. H.F. Bullen was the managing director. The company was involved with shipbuilding, marine railways, marine repair, and salvage work. Mrs. W.F. Bullen was granddaughter to Sir James Douglas, and the Bullen family was related to Sir John Commerell, V.C., Crimean War.

The fonds consists of photographs of salvage operations (1906-1910) carried out by the Bullen Dockyard (B.C. Marine Railway Company), of the first vessels salvaged by Yarrows Limited, of other ships and salvage vessels, of Admiral Sir John E. Commerell, and of the SS Princess Louise on the Fraser River (1899).
