Biographical history

Bert Leaning was born in 1895, died in 1955, buried in the Lytton Highway cemetery. He was a surveyor for the CPR railway from 1909 until he joined the armed forces [ca. 1918]. After the war, he worked for the Dept. of Highways and became general foreman for the Public Works Maintenance crew in Boston Bar, B.C.[ca 1940's]. Bert owned property and built a house in Lytton, at the end of Kent road. He sold this and bought property on George Road and built a house there [ca 1950s].

Custodial history

Bert Leaning passed his albums to William Russell (Boots) Kent. When Boots passed away, his wife, Elsie, gave the albums to Larry Williams, who donated them to the Lytton Museum and Archives.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of 5 albums. Includes photographs of many of the job sites that Bert surveyed for the railway, 1910 and 1911. Also includes photographs of self and friend, J.B. Brown, another surveyor; surveyor crews, Lytton old-timers, and World War I veterans.
