        History

        Matthew Baillie Begbie was born on the island of Mauritius. The son of an army colonel, Begbie studied law and was selected by British colonial officials to establish British Columbia's judicial system. He arrived in 1858 and became a judge. He was appointed Chief Justice of British Columbia and was knighted in 1875.
