Biographical history
Reverend Basil Shakespeare Sutherland Hartley was ordained by the BC Conference of the United Church of Canada in 1939. Accompanied by his wife Edythe, Hartley worked in communities throughout BC, including Skidegate (1939-1940), Kitimaat (1941-1943), Windermere Valley (1944-1945), Greenwood (1946-1947), Nakusp (1948-1950). In 1951 he retired to Vancouver, and later lived in Nanaimo (1953), Castor, Alberta (1945-1955), and Rockey Mountain House (1956-1957). He died in 1973. His widow, Edythe Hartley, later remarried, becoming Edythe McClure.

Edyth McClure was the wife of the former United Church missionary, Rev. Basil Hartley, who served in the Kitimat area.
Custodial history
Edythe McClure donated the audio cassette and photographs to the museum in 1983. The 8mm film reel was discovered in the backlog of the MOA Archives.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of audio, video, and visual materials created by Basil and Edythe Hartley. Materials include video footage of the Haisla people, which Hartley shot while working in Kitimaat from 1941-1944, a voiceover for the footage which Hartley’s widow, Edythe McClure, created in ca. 1983, a letter, and three photographs of Kitimaat people and landscapes. The three audio cassettes all contain the same 1983 recording.

The Cranbrook Archives holds several photographs that are part of an Edythe McClure Collection. The Kitimat Museum and Archives also has an Edyth McClure fonds. Edythe McClure and Edyth McClure are identified as the same person.
