Custodial history
These cards likely came to the archives with other items from the Estate of Barbara McKay.
Scope and content
This collection of cards consisted of five albums, one cigar box full of cards, and some loose cards. Four of the albums were in acceptable physical condition and were maintained as albums. The fifth album was not retained, but the cards in it were removed and kept. The cigar box was retained but the cards removed from it. The black album contains approximately 220 cards from the British Isles, Canada, Europe and some are Easter cards. There are two green albums with mauve flowers on the cover, each containing approximately 200 cards. These albums contain Canadian, U.S.A., European and British Isles postcards as well as several Christmas cards. The small red album contains approximately 94 postcards, two Valentine, three Christmas and postcards from Vancouver, other parts of Canada and the British Isles. The fifth album was badly water damaged and the approximately 114 cards in it were removed and placed in mylar sleeves. These have been placed in the order as the cards came out of the album and are numbered. Most of the postcards from this book were from the British Isles, particularly Scotland. Some were from Canada (unused). All are addressed to Mrs. McCulloch in Oban, Scotland postmarked 1905 - 1914. Several loose cards, with no order, and the cards that were in the cigar box have been placed in a separate box and arranged according to the subjects they consist of: Christmas, Easter and Birthday cards plus British Isles, U.S. and Canadian postcards. Some postcards were unused but all cards that were loose were addressed to Mrs. G. W. McKay - either in Scotland, New Westminster, Victoria or Vancouver. The cards that were stored in the cigar box were predominantly Christmas and New Year cards with several Easter cards and a couple of birthday cards. It also contained some St. Patricks Day cards and some old advertising plus four hand painted unused postcards. Also in the cigar box were three printed coloured watercolour booklets along with text one each for Shakespeare, Longfellow and Bonnie Dundee.
