    Biographical history

In 1926, Mr. J.E. Montague started his own fruit and vegetable shipping company under the name of J.E. Montague Ltd. In 1928, the firm was considerably enlarged and became known as the independent non-grower packing house, B.C. Fruit Shippers Ltd. That same year, the company purchased the McNair building from the Vernon Fruit Union. Led by Mr. Montague, the business gradually grew to include packing houses at Vernon, Oyama, Westbank, West Summerland, and Oliver. By the time the business was at its peak, the business also owned cold storage plants in Vernon, West Summerland and Oliver. The business continued under Mr. Montague's guidance until 1941, when he left his official position in the company to become president of Inland Ice and Cold Storage Ltd. Mr. Montague died in 1942, victim of a drowning accident.
