Administrative history

As One That Serves, more commonly known as AOTS, was a men's service club with church sponsorship. It was founded by Dr. Herbert Riggs, a member of the Kerrisdale Methodist Church, in 1923. The AOTS movement expanded to a national level and a Central Council was established in 1939. AOTS did not officially become affiliated with the United Church until 1952. Two early projects in B.C. were prairie relief during the 1930s and the Polytechnic School for unemployed men, which was started in Vancouver in 1935. The AOTS was also involved in youth work.
