Biographical history

Alice Borden (nee Witken) obtained her B.A. at the University of California in 1930. She married the noted archaeologist Charles Borden in 1931. Borden studied at the University of Heidelberg (1935-1936), taught at her private kindergarten for a time, and later became the first Director of the University of British Columbia's Child Study Centre (1961-1963). Thereafter, she served as a professor in the Faculty of Education, specializing in early childhood education, until 1970.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence, essays, diaries, financial records and notes created by Borden as both as a student and through her teaching career from kindergarten instructor through to university professor of early childhood education. Fonds contains administrative details about the establishment and operation of UBC's Child Study Centre and also includes minutes and reports from the Faculty of Education.
