Biographical history

Alexander Godfrey was born in Mount Forest, Ontario. He went to Manitoba around 1876 where he stayed until 1887. At that time he came to Vancouver, and went into the hardware business with a brother, Thomas. Godfrey was elected alderman for Ward 2 for 1891-1892. In 1894 he moved to New Westminster where he had his own business. In 1899 he went to Atlin as an agent for Dunn Hardware. In 1900 he moved to Dawson where he died suddenly of pneumonia.

Scope and content

The fonds consists largely of letters written by Godfrey to his wife and family from Atlin and Dawson, 1899-1900. There is also a copy of his marriage certificate, 1889; a list of signatures supporting Godfrey as alderman in 1891; two school report cards of Eva Godfrey, 1901 and 1907; photographs of Godfrey and his family, including view of St. Paul's Indian Mission church in North Vancouver; newspapers The Atlin Claim, 1899-1909, The Klondike Nugget, 1900, and others, 1891-1909.
