Kerr, Al

They worked under Bob Broadland, Chief of Parks, as Parks Officers. Their job was to research and plan for historic parks and sites. They worked on this collection for the two years of 1974 and 1975. When Fort Steele Historic Park was first established it was a collection of original structures, stories and several other things that senior bureaucrats wanted to enhance it with (ie. Clydesdales, Perry Creek water wheel). It was not at all connected in terms of presentation or interpretation. Al Kerr and Patrick Frey were given the task of developing a 'guide book' to incorporate all of this within the story of Fort Steele. The files in this sous-fonds are their original research files that enabled them to produce "A Guide to Fort Steele Historic Park", which was published by the Ministry of Recreation and Conservation in 1978. Al Kerr and Patrick Frey worked mainly out of their Victoria offices, relying on Provincial Archives and Ministry of Lands documents for research information. They made two field trips to Fort Steele Historic Park to use historic information on site, to interview local residents, and to take photographs.
