History
Wilbert Roy York (1894-1983) was born in Vancouver and raised in Steveston. He served with Connaught's Own Rifles during World War I. After the war Roy worked for the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and married Jessie Ketcheson of Eburne. The couple moved to Delta in 1921 to try farming, acquiring land through the Soldier's Settlement Act. In 1929 Roy was offered a position with F. V. Delta Co-Operative in Ladner, eventually becoming its manager in 1940. Mr. and Mrs. York had five children. Mr. York was active in Delta Branch No. 61, The Royal Canadian Legion for many years, and served as president and secretary besides presiding on many committees. During World War II, he acted as the secretary for the Citizens' Committee which oversaw the work of the A.R.P. (Air Raid Precaution), a civilian protection organization. His interest in civil defense, especially the provision of welfare services, continued into the Cold War and his work in the Legion in the 1950s and 1960s.
