John Walter Wigley was born in Uruguay. He served in the 2nd Yorkshire Regiment of the British Army from 1888 to 1901, including service in South Africa. He joined the 138th Battalion of the Canadian Army at Edmonton in 1915, served in France and was discharged in 1919.
