Biographical history
Walter Young received a B.A. from the University of British Columbia in 1955 and went to Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar and completed his M.A. in 1962. After returning to Canada, Young taught at Manitoba and Toronto before coming to UBC in 1962 as an instructor in political science. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1965, and remained at UBC until 1973, when he went to the University of Victoria as chairman of the Department of Political Science. He was very active in faculty and administrative affairs at UBC and founded both B.C. Studies and the B.C. Legislative Internship program. He was very interested in Canadian socialism and was a founding member of the NDP.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of materials which document Walter Young's personal life, academic career, and political interests. It includes correspondence, minutes and agendas, reports, lecture notes and other course materials, financial statements, manuscripts, index cards, audio recordings, and publications (including books, newspapers, magazines, journals, pamphlets, and clippings). They are arranged in two series, Personal Papers and Research. Their original order has largely been maintained.

Immediate source of acquisition
The bulk of the papers were donated directly to the UBC Archives by Walter Young in 1983. The remainder were donated by his widow Beryl in 1984.
