Records management and collecting policies
In order to facilitate primary research, Special Collections acquires archival materials which document the economic, political, cultural, labour and literary history of British Columbia. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of fishing, forestry, and mining with important business and labour records such as Henry Doyle, United Fisherman and Allied Workers' Union, MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., International Woodworkers of America, Western Miner, and the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (Canada). The political materials include the provincial office records from the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation as well as prominent politicians such as Angus and Grace MacInnis, Simon Fraser Tolmie and Charles Tupper. Records created by significant B.C. authors and artists include Malcolm Lowry, Ethel Wilson, Roderick Haig-Brown, Eric Nicol, Jack Shadbolt and Toni Onley. Material relating to the Chinese, Japanese, Sikh and Swedish communities in the province is also acquired. Special Collections also includes fonds of national interest and the pre-Raphaelite manuscripts of Victorian England.
