History
The U'mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay is operated by the U'mista Cultural Society. The centre was opened in 1980. The centre acquires, preserves, and exhibits native artifacts of cultural, artistic, and historical value to the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwagiulth); promotes cultural and artistic activities; and acquires and makes accessible information and records relating to the language and history of the Kwakwaka'wakw.

The purpose of the archives is to collect and preserve archival materials which pertain, in whole or in part, to the language, culture and history of the Kwakwaka'wakw. The holdings include records of the U'Mista Cultural Society which have enduring value for administrative, legal, fiscal and historicalpurposes. The Archives strives to recover from other institutions and individuals information and records of cultural, artistic and historical value to the Kwakwaka'wakw.
