Biographical history

Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange began a shipping operation in 1907. Growers united under the B.C. Fruit and Produce Exchange, an association of local fruit exchanges. Chairman of the first meeting was J.D. McGuire and L.B. Pangman was appointed secretary. Five Directors included J.W. McCallum, L.B. Pangman, W.F. Buchan, Banks, and C. Brookes. A building was constructed by Jackson and Parker for eight hundred dollars and the organization operated at a loss the first year. By 1912 the Exchange needed larger quarters. A new building was opened and came in well under the five thousand dollar budget. The ground floor was "practically frost free", a great advantage. An elevator was installed along with a cement floor and offices for a cost of under seven thousand dollars. The Exchange continued to expand. A cooling plant was installed in 1925, a cold storage plant established in 1934, and an addition to the feed store was built in 1942. A packing plant was built in Canoe in 1946. As part of its operations, a box factory was operated and, according to Ernest Doe's Centennial History of Salmon Arm, the Exchange expanded the factory into a sawmill. Apple production declined over the subsequent years and the entire operation was sold to Shuswap Consumers' Co-Operative Association in 1959. Fruit went to Vernon for packing, and the need for the Exchange was eliminated. S.A.F.E. Ltd. was the registered name of the Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange, established in 1913. The Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange operated a shipping organization and had expanded into the retail market. Local retail merchants objected to the expansion and petitioned the CPR to control the activities of its leaseholder, Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange. In 1913, the CPR served the Exchange with a notice, demanding the organization vacate the premises within thirty days. The lease was declared cancelled because the Exchange was in violation by operating a retail business. As a result the two functions of the Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange separated. The limited company, S.A.F.E., was created to provide a cooperative store for the purchase of goods and supplies. In response to the eviction, a lot was purchased and cleared and a building constructed to house the retail operation, S.A.F.E. Ltd. An agreement between the Salmon Arm Farmers' Exchange and S.A.F.E. Ltd. was established in 1914 where the store was leased for nine hundred dollars a year. The retail operation boomed. On August 25, 1956, the store was levelled by fire. The building was reconstructed over the winter of 1956-57 and Mackie and Hooper Construction Co. Ltd. of Vernon was awarded the contract. The store opened in November 1957. With unanticipated construction costs combined with the delay in opening, S.A.F.E. was economically drained. Consequently, the shareholders entered into an agreement with the B.C. Co-operative Wholesale Society for the sale of the assets of S.A.F.E.
