Joseph William Rowland lived in the Burnside area of Greater Victoria. He worked as a farmer for many years at the Burnside Farm and later became the proprietor of the Burnside Hotel located at the corner of Burnside and Admiral. Rowland was married to Euphemia Rowland (nee Dodd) and together they had two daughters and five sons. He is buried at the Ross Bay Cemetery.
