Biographical history

Robert Strachan was born in Scotland in 1913, emigrating to Canada in 1931. He worked as a farm labourer and miner until he settled in Powell River and informally apprenticed as a carpenter. He subsequently became president of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. In 1952, he ran for public office (MLA) as a Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) candidate. He became leader of the provincial party in 1956 and remained Leader of the Opposition in the B.C. Legislature until 1968. When the New Democratic Party came to power provincially in 1972, Strachan served as Minister of Transport and Communications. In 1975, he resigned his seat when he was appointed B.C.
