Biographical history

Rita Cecilia McTavish was born at Invertavish Farm, Ardmore, the daughter of George and Catherine (Helmcken) McTavish. She married David C. Hughes, and at the time of her death in Victoria, was survived by one daughter, Margo Jamieson.

Custodial history

The material in this fonds at one time belonged to Rita Hughes, mother of Margo Jamieson, who bought them from Pegasus Antiques, Victoria.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of six piano scores of operas autographed "Miss Helmcken 1873", who is believed to be Catherine Amelia Helmcken (later McTavish), eldest daughter of John Sebastien Helmcken and grandmother of Margo Jamieson. Also included is a photograph of Mrs. Harry Helmcken in a limousine at Beacon Hill Park.
