Biographical history

The Public Relations Office was officially created by the Museum of Anthropology in 1982 and dissolved in October of 1990. The Public Relations Office, headed by a Public Relations Officer, was established to increase the public's awareness of the Museum of Anthropology and to promote its programs and special events. Functioning as an intermediary between the museum and the public, the Office was responsible for developing the public image of the museum. To achieve these functions, the Public Relations Officer was responsible for developing and maintaining media contacts, holding press conferences, writing press releases, advertising and producing publications about the museum, its programs, events, and services, building relationships with tour guides and hotel operators, and developing techniques for increasing museum attendance. In addition, the Officer was also responsible for coordinating fundraising and promotional events, conducting VIP visits, representing the museum on various committees and at community events, administering the museum's Print Out Art Loan programme, and acting as a liaison for the Gallery Guides programme. Previous to its establishment, the functions of the Public Relations Office, including public programming and public relations activities, were fulfilled by the museum's Extension Curator between 1978 and 1981. In October, 1990, the functions of the Public Relations Office were assumed by the newly created Communications Office, headed by a Director of Communications. The Public Relations Officer was immediately responsibel to the museum's Director. In addition to the Public Relations Officer, the Public Relations Office often consisted of one or more Public Relations Assistants, who were answerable to the Officer. In 1982, Ruth Anderson was appointed as Public Relations Co-ordinator; the position was re-titled Public Relations Officer in 1985. In January, 1986, Christopher Miller took over the position of Public Relations Officer. During Miller's time in this position it was renamed Public Relations and Development Officer in 1987, and Public Relations and Marketing Officer in March 1990. After Miller vacated the position in October, 1990, the Public Relations Office was dissolved.
