Biographical history

Since inception of the office, the Provincial Treasurer has held responsibility for the Province's accounting, property management, and personnel management functions, as well as administration of Sisters' finances. The Provincial Treasurer or bursar position evolved from the "econome" of the Vicariate, an office that was frequently held by the Provincial Superior or Mere Vicariale in the decades prior to the Twentieth Century. After the position of Econome Provinciale was held by a separate sister, it was listed in the Obediences (list of personnel for the year) as Econome Locale et Provinciale until 1927, when the English term Provincial Bursar was finally adopted. The office did not officially become known as the Provincial Treasurer until 1985. The Provincial Treasurer is answerable to the Provincial Superior and the Provincial Council. She must also report periodically to the General Bursar at the Motherhouse in Lachine. The bookkeeper reports to the Provincial Treasurer, as do a number of other staff persons employed by the Province. Treasurers to date include Sisters: Mary of the Conception, 1858-1859; Mary of the Sacred Heart, 1859- ; Mary des Sept Doleurs, 1870- ; Mary Gerard Majella, 1904-1907; Mary Stanislaus Kostka, 1907-1908; Mary Gerard Majella, 1908-1933; Mary Francis of Jesus, 1933-1935; Mary Cornelius, 1935-1957; Mary Annunciata, 1957-1982; Pat Donovan, 1982-1991; and Rachel Agnes Bushey, 1991-present.

Scope and content

The sous-fonds consists of seven series including accounting, administration, personnel management, property management, estates and legacies, a more recent main subject series, which incoporates all functions, as well as a miscellaneous registers and general miscellaneous series. These series consist of correspondence, registers, journals, and ledgers, maps, plans, and drawings, minutes, reports, and photographs. Material dating from prior to the 1960s and early 1970s and stored in the vault was arranged loosely by major function and then by subject or theme. The material transferred from the Treasurer's office most recently was arranged by subject in one main series consisting of many sub-series.
