Biographical history
The Prefect of Studies, written in French as Prefete des Etudes, was established in 1890 as an official of the Vicariate in charge of education, prior to the formation of St. Joseph's Province a year later. She was appointed by the Superior General in Council and reported to the Provincial Superior and her Council. The office remained in place until 1970, with the last three years being listed in the Obediences as "Councillor-Education." By 1973, St. Ann's Academy and many of the other Provincial Schools had closed and with only one school still in operation, there was no longer a need for a Prefect of Studies.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The sous-fonds consists of fourteen series of records generated during the course of the Prefect of Studies' duties to oversee the quality of education in the Province. These series include: Correspondence, Class Registers, official visitation of classes, Rapport de la Prefete des Etudes, Maximum Class registration records, General Statistics, Class Statistics, Examination results, Student marks summary, St. Ann's Academy classroom records, St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Summer Schooling, Record of Sisters' studies, Teacher Qualifications and Miscellaneous. Generally her duties were to see that the schedule of studies adopted by the Institute was carried out in her jurisdiction. Though the office of Prefect of Studies was disbanded in 1970, her records were maintained for a further three years, as evidenced by further accumulations in some series. Records are predominantly ordered by type of record and then by school or grade.
