History

Pius X Mission (Skagway) was built in 1931 by Reverend G. Edgar Gallant, who perceived a need for a boarding school for children, especially aboriginal boys and girls, in southeastern Alaska. He built Crimont Hall in 1932 and searched for Sisters to teach and care for the girls and small boys. The Sisters of St. Ann accepted and arrived in September 1932. Crimont Hall was destroyed by fire in November 1945. The Sisters remained in Skagway in temporary quarters ("Broadway Barracks") and continued to teach in makeshift classrooms. A set of new buildings allowed Pius X Mission to welcome students and staff in 1948. The Sisters closed the school and withdrew at the end of 1959.
