    Biographical history

Myrtle Philip (nee Tapley) first worked as a teacher. She married Alex Philip in 1908 and settled in Vancouver. The Philips first visited Alta Lake (then called Summit Lake) in what is now Whistler, B.C., in 1909. Myrtle's family, the Tapley's, began construction of a resort lodge, to be known as Rainbow Lodge, at Alta Lake in 1911. The lodge was opened in 1915 and operated by the Philips. Myrtle Philip was appointed the first postmaster for Alta Lake in 1915 and served the community in a number of positions, including as Secretary of the Alta Lake School Board. The Philips eventually sold Rainbow Lodge in 1948 but remained in the Alta Lake/Whistler area.
