Patrick Mowat settled in Enderby, B.C., in 1905 with his parents James and Pauline Mowat and siblings Marjorie, Frances, Joe, Hugh and David. His father James built a sawmill in Mara and later established an insurance and real estate business in Enderby. Patrick joined the 30th B.C. Horse militia unit in Enderby in 1913 and trained at the Vernon Army Camp. He was mobilized in 1914 when B.C. Horse became C squadron, 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. They trained in Victoria, B.C., Brandon, Manitoba, and Shorncliffe, England before arriving in France on September 22, 1915. In 1916 Patrick was transferred to the 8th Brigade Light Trench Mortar Battery. Patrick served in France and Belgium throughout the war. He was discharged April 4, 1919 and returned to Enderby where he resumed his work in the Bank of Montreal.
