Malcolm MacDonald was born in Lucknow, Ontario. He was educated at the University of Toronto and obtained his L.L.B. from Osgoode Hall in 1906. After practicing briefly in Ontario, MacDonald moved to B.C. in 1912. In 1909, he became leader of the Liberal party. In 1916, MacDonald was elected as member (MLA) of the Provincial legislature. In a general election shortly thereafter he ran successfully again and was appointed Attorney General. In 1917, he resigned as Attorney General but retained his seat. In 1924, MacDonald was appointed to the Court of Appeal. He later served as Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal between 1940 and 1941.

The fonds consists of one benchbook, 1924-1925; photographs, 1916-1930; speeches, ca. 1920-1940; some correspondence, ephemeral items and one pen and ink cartoon drawing.
