Biographical history

Brothers Jack and Joseph Lubzinski started the Marine Products Company in 1951. The company manufactured mahogany steering wheels for boats of all types, including commercial fishing boats and luxury liners. The wheels were designed by Jack Lubzinski, who obtained a United States patent in 1952 for certain improvements to the wheel hub which were integral to the design of Marine Products steering wheels. The brothers designed and built the building at 3211 Number 3 Road that housed their manufacturing business and equipment. The building housed a saw mill and foundry, as well as equipment for wood processing and finishing, and a machine shop for welding and burning. The brothers imported mahogany logs from Nicaragua and Guatemala, and exported finished marine steering wheels and steering gears to the United States, he United Kingdom, New Zealand, Venezuela and Italy. When the brothers finally sold their property and retired in 2005, the company was one of the last in the world continuing to make ship steering wheels. The Lubzinski brothers grew up in Richmond; Jack was a small child when the Lubzinski family immigrated from Poland, and Joseph was born in Steveston. The brothers attended Richmond High School, where Jack distinguished himself as an accomplished builder of models, which he exhibited at various local and provincial fairs. Following his high school graduation in 1943, Jack attended the University of British Columbia, receiving a Bachelor's degree (1947) and a Master's degree (1950) in Physics. Prior to starting Marine Products Company with his brother, Joseph Lubzinski was involved in the Fraser River and Gulf of Georgia commercial fishing industry and in boat building.
