History

The local Cooperative Commonwealth Federation was chartered on Feb. 13, 1939 through the BC party. When the CCF became the New Democratic Party in 1961 the club was rechartered on Feb. 17, 1962 as the Lake Cowichan and District NDP Club. The name was changed again in 1979 to honour long - time area MLA. It was now called The Bob Strachan Club. The club discussed and helped to formulate party policy, organized and helped local campaigns for federal and provincial elections, raised funds for local activities and sponsored local public meetings. On September 18, 1943 an organization meeting was held and Robert Beech was elected president, Mrs. Nolan - secretary and Mrs. Hankin - treasurer. At the Oct. 1943 meeting Mr. Barnett was elected vice - president. Unable to find any information from 1939 - Sept. 1943 concerning minutes. The club is still in existence(1997), carrying on much the same activities.
