History
Ethel Johns, the first nursing director at the University of British Columbia, was born in England. She graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1902 and practiced as a private nurse for a short time. In 1914, Johns went to the Teachers College at Columbia University before returning to Winnipeg as superintendent of the Children's Hospital. In 1919, Johns was appointed to the dual position of Director of Nursing Services and Education at Vancouver General Hospital and coordinator of the newly-established program of nursing at the University of British Columbia. Under her guidance, the five-year program leading to the B.Sc. (Nursing) was established. After leaving the university to serve as an advisor to the development of schools of nursing in Europe (1925-1929) and as a Director of Studies with Cornell Medical College Association Project, Johns returned to Canada in 1933 to become editor of the Canadian Nurse, a position which she held until her retirement in 1944.
