Biographical history

John Dean was born in Cheshire, England and emigrated to Canada in 1873. He arrived in Victoria in 1885 and received a CPR contract to construct water tanks. A few years later, he lived in the Kootenays, becoming a mining speculator, alderman, and Mayor of Rossland (1903). By 1909, Dean had opened a real estate office in Victoria, and became a lifelong civic activist. He was a dedicated environmentalist, early tourist booster, and a strong proponent of city planning. He donated land at Mount Newton to Saanich in 1931, the 80-acre site being named John Dean Park.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of consists of correspondence and papers relating to mining and real estate in Rossland and real estate in Victoria. Included also, as Dean acted as an arbitrator, are papers dealing with land expropriation by the British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) for its Saanich Suburban Inter-urban Railway and papers concerning the Victoria (B.C.) Shipowners Limited dispute. The fonds also contains Dean's personal diaries, his diary as Mayor of Rossland for 1903, two account books and a copy of a Victoria city census ca. 1900-1901.
