Planta, Joseph Phrys, b. 1839

Biographical history

Joseph Phrys Planta was born in Wales and emigrated to Australia where he married Margaret Stacy. He moved to B.C. in 1870 and taught school. He was appointed stipendiary magistrate for Vancouver Island in 1888, and also Police Magistrate in Nanaimo in 1891.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of Magistrate's records for 1889-1891, including depositions and inquest reports, records relating to the financial affairs of Martha O'Sullivan and J.B. Holmes (1886-1898), for whom Plant acted as agent, miscellaneous business papers (1887-1888), photographs, and four notebooks of spiritual, historical and other notes (ca. 1903).
