    Biographical history

Eva Jones Monkhouse was born in Meadowlea, Manitoba and moved to North Enderby in 1904 at the age of three. She attend school in North Enderby and Enderby and worked in the Enderby Post Office. In the 1920s she left Enderby and moved to the Coast to teach sewing in the Coqualeeza Indian School. There she met and married W. Don Monkhouse; they made their home in Sardis and then Chilliwack. In 1953 Don Monkhouse and T.F. Adams took over the Hupel Ranch near Mabel Lake. Don and Eva operated the Hupel Coffee Shop from 1953-1956. They continued to reside at Hupel every summer until Don's passing in January 1959. Eva passed away December 18, 1964. Eva Monkhouse collected stories from the oldtimers while she was living and working in the community. Some of her articles based on these stories were published in the 'Enderby Commoner'. She kept the remaining articles, rough drafts and notes with an eye towards publication. In 2006, after the manuscripts were donated to the Enderby & District Museum, volunteers in the museum edited Eva's articles and rough drafts and published the articles in a small booklet entitled 'Kingfisher Stories'.

    Custodial history

When Eva Monkhouse moved to Chilliwack, she gave her collection to Alice Large. Alice's daughter, Helen Brandt, donated them to the Enderby & District Museum.
