Empire Day, also known as May 24 and Queen Victoria's Birthday, has been celebrated in Nanaimo since the 1850s. Activities include the May Queen crowning, sports events, games, a parade and fireworks. Empire Day celebrations continue to be among Nanaimo's best attended events.
