Biographical history

Dr. Andrew McConnell Davidson was born on November 16, 1885, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and received his early schooling in Scotland and at the University of London. He received a Baccalaureat of Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1912, and in that same year a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Manitoba. He later returned to Scotland to pursue the study of dermatology and did further post-graduate work in London, Paris and Vienna. During World War I, Dr. Davidson served in France as an officer for the Royal Army Medical Corps (1915-1917) and in Canada in the Canadian Army Medical Corps (1917-1919), specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of venereal and skin diseases. After the war, he was instrumental in the development of the Winnipeg Health League and in various specialized clinics in Manitoba, including the provinces first venereal disease clinic. He practiced in Winnipeg between the wars, where he also taught as Lecturer of Dermatology at the University of Manitoba and carried out extensive dermatological research, publishing in a variety of medical journals. He was also the founder and first Secretary of the Natural History Society of Manitoba. In 1934, he was promoted to Major in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and was placed in charge of the Medical Section of the COTC at the University of Manitoba. In 1939, he returned to active military service with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and was involved in the institution of the PULHEMS system in the military. After the war, he came to Vancouver, where he was in practice in association with his son, Dr. Kenneth Davidson. In 1947, Dr. A.M. Davidson was elected as the founding president of the Canadian Dermatological Association. He also held an honorary vice-presidency of the Twelfth International Congress of Dermatology in Washington, D.C., and was a winner of the Sabouraud Medal for research in dermatology. Dr. Davidson was a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, a Senior Member of the Canadian Medical Association, and a Senior Fellow of the Canadian Dermatological Association. He died in Vancouver on April 18, 1972.

Custodial history

The records were in the custody of Winifred Wariner, daughter of Dr. Davidson, prior to their donation to the BCMA Archives in 1997.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of records of Dr. Davidson documenting his medical practice as a dermatologist, his extensive research and publication in the field of dermatology, his early education, and his military experience as a physician. Fonds includes early education records, including detailed class notes of medical lectures and practicums, diplomas and certificates, extensive documentation of the diagnosis and treatment of venereal and skin diseases in the military during World War I, extensive documentation, both in textual and graphic form, relating to the treatment of skin diseases in Manitoba in the years between the wars, personal diaries and correspondence, research records, including original typescripts and reprints of publications, records relating to the establishment and development of the Canadian Dermatological Association, personal photographs, and detailed patient documentation.
