        Don Hamilton was born on December 16, 1926 in Vancouver. He grew up in Vancouver, graduated in 1945 from Grandview High School, and went on to work at various canneries for Canadian Fishing Company: Bones Bay, Alert Bay (1945-1946), Carlisle Cannery (1947-1948), Butedale (1949-1952), Atlin Fish in Prince Rupert (Winter 1952), Porcher Island (1953-1954), Westminster Fish (1955), New England Fish Company in Ketchikan, Alaska (1956-1957) Cordova (1958-1959) and Skidegate, Queen Charlotte Islands (1958-1959). From 1959 to 1968 he served in the United States Army and has lived in Oakland, California since 1968.
