Administrative history
At the 72nd session of the Synod held in Vancouver, B.C. in May 1980, Diocesan Synod passed a motion that "the Diocese of New Westminster establish a Task Force to study the possibility of a Diocesan centre, located in the geographic centre of the greater metropolitan area of Vancouver, capable of serving the needs of all Anglicans, and particularly our Diocesan clergy". The Task Force had to report to Diocesan Council by April, 1981. The initial report established basic needs and components, but unfortunately recommended a site that was not acceptable to the municipal authorities. A second Task Force was constituted in December 1981 and made several recommendations relating to space requirements, the availability of the site of St. John the Divine, Burnaby, a feasibility study, and the appointment of a committee responsible for the implementation of the project. The firm of Watson - Donald Architects was selected to do the feasibility study. The Task Force, chaired by the Rev. John W. Ruder, presented the architects' feasibility report on February 14, 1984. The report examined two central issues: the development potential of the land owned by St. John the Divine church and associated possibilities of expanding the site; the creation of an "intergenerational community" envisioned as a mix of subsidized and market housing together with the Diocesan Centre and parish facilities. The Diocesan Centre proposal was never acted upon.
