Biographical history

Established in 1873 by the Parliament of Canada (SC 1873, c. 4), the Department of the Interior was responsible for administering the Dominion Lands Act (SC 1872, c. 23). All federal Crown land west of the Manitoba/Ontario border to the Rocky Mountains was under the jurisdiction of this department. Between 1885-1930, the department's jurisdiction was extended to the 40-mile wide Railway Belt and the 3.5-million-acre Peace River Block, both in British Columbia. The department was also responsible for lands north of the 60th parallel, specifically the Yukon Territory. On 1 Dec 1936, the department was dissolved, and a new agency formed, the Department of Mines and Resources (SC 1936, c. 33).

Custodial history

The majority of the records were transferred from the Federal Government to Provincial Government departments, and then to the BC Archives. Additional microfilm copies of records were acquired from the Public Archives of Canada in 1959.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of records generated by the Dept. of the Interior and its subordinate branches, divisions and agencies including the Topographical Surveys Branch, Dominion Lands Branch, Forest Service, and the Yukon District mining recorder at Tagish Lake. The records reflect the Dept.'s functions and include survey files, surveyor diaries, homestead and pre-emption files, mineral claim files, records relating to Doukhobor settlement on Dominion land, annual improvement reports of the Shuswap Forest District and ranger patrol diaries.
