    Biographical history

Alexander Davie (1868-1945) was born in Durham County, Ontario, September 12, 1868. In 1894 he travelled west and settled in Ladner in 1895. He leased the Skinner ranch and then purchased farmland in 1896, expanding his holdings in 1910. Alexander, with Joseph Bulman of Kamloops, was involved in the heavy horse industry. He also was well known for his purebred herd of Holstein dairy cattle, and the breeding of other livestock. He served long terms as a director or executive member on many livestock associations, provincial and local, including the Delta Agricultural Society. He was an active supporter of community development, serving as councillor on the Delta Municipal Council, chairman of the Delta School Board, and member of the Delta Board of Trade and Delta Lodge No.21 I.O.O.F among other organizations. Alexander married Margaret Jane Paterson (1873-1963) of Kincardine, Ontario, in 1903. Margaret had come west to act as housekeeper for her brother Alex (A.D.) Paterson who was managing Inverholm Farm for his uncle T.W. Paterson. Margaret was an accomplished horsewoman and won prizes for her driving and her horses. She was interested in the development of education in Delta and was an organizer of the first Parent Teachers Association. Both "Madge" and her husband were active members of the Presbyterian, later United Church of Ladner. Alexander and Margaret had three sons, Murray (1906-1993), Kenneth (1910-1984), Alastair (1915-1981), and a daughter Agnes (1913- ). All three sons continued to farm and acquire farms of their own. Murray became well-known as a livestock breeder and was honored by the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. Murray married Dorothy Savage (1909- ). The Savage family were also early settlers in the Delta region, William Rowland Savage and his son Hugh (Dorothy's father) farming on Westham Island.
