Biographical history

The parish of Christ Church was established in 1925. Prior to that, Anglican work had been initiated among the native Indians in the Alert Bay and Fort Rupert area by the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.) in the late 1870's. The C.M.S. mission stations in British Columbia (all the other ones were in the Diocese of Caledonia) were collectively called the North Pacific Mission (later British Columbia Mission). The mission came to include a residential school, St. Michael's, also originally operated by the C.M.S. By 1911 the mission included a hospital and was being served by the Columbia Coast Mission. In 1912 services were begun for European settlers at Holberg and Port Hardy. In 1925, European and native congregations amalgamated and formed the self supporting Christ Church Parish, ending missionary support by the C.M.S.
