Biographical history

Camp Alexandra, located at Crescent Beach, was established in 1918 as a holiday camp for orphans and needy children from the city. The camp was originally operated by the Fresh Air Fund of Vancouver, expenses being paid by the Alexandra Orphanage Board. In 1925, the camp's programs were expanded to include a boys club. Through the 1930s, the camp was also referred to as the Alexandra Orphanage Camp and the Alexandra Fresh Air Camp. From the 1940s through the 1960s, the camp provided programs for the elderly and the handicapped. In recent years, funding for Camp Alexandra has been provided by the United Way through the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of Greater Vancouver.
