Biographical history
Christopher Benjamin Lefroy was born in England in 1872, the son of a Royal Navy Commander. Arriving in Canada in 1892, he began farming in Manitoba. He later moved to Port Kells and Vancouver before arriving in Vernon, where he began a farm near Swan Lake. After eight years as a farmer, Lefroy entered the real estate and insurance business, and even became Secretary for the B.C. Liberal Association. In 1891, he married Agatha Alexander. They remained together until her death in 1903. He remarried in 1905, to Georgina Gertrude Ellis. Mr. Lefroy's post office career also began in 1905. By 1915, he had opened the first field post office at Camp Vernon serving the troops stationed there. He also served in WWI with the B.C. Horse and the 225th Infantry and Forestry Corps. Socially, he was active in the Masons, was president of the Great War Veterans Association, chairman of the school board, a justice of the peace, a notary public, and an ardent participant in lawn bowling and cricket. Mr. Lefroy died in Vernon on Jan. 23, 1963, leaving five sons and a daughter.
