History
Between 1964 and 1974, BCIT was administered directly by the Ministry of Education through the BCIT Advisory council, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Education. As the institute developed, the need for on-site administrative decision-making became essential. In 1974 the Institute of Technology Act was enacted to place the management of BCIT, and the final responsibility for educational programs in the hands of the Institutes first Board of Governors. The first meeting of the Board of Governors was held on July 31, 1974. Dr. Ralph Patterson of Canadian Forest Products served as the first chairperson. In 1979, the Board of Governors passed a by-law establishing the Educational Council. The Councils mandate included maintaining, reviewing and recommending changes to new or existing educational policies or programs, and reviewing the performance and effectiveness of advisory committees. In 1995 the Board was expanded to include student, faculty and staff representation.
