Beta Sigma Phi (Life, Learning and Friendship) is an organization created for women in search of culture and social activity, to offer young women something which was creative, productive, and hopeful. It was founded in 1931 by Walter Ross and incorporated in 1932 under a charter granted by the State of Missouri. Publication of The Torch, the societys magazine, commenced in 1932. Conventions have been held since 1934. While it is not primarily a philanthropic organization, in 1947 an International Endowment Fund was set up so members could make contributions to better the world. Beginning in 1951 interest free loans for emergencies were made available to members. After Walter Rosss death in 1969, the Dorothy and Walter W. Ross Memorial Scholarship fund was set up to provide college scholarships for members and their children or grandchildren. The first North Shore Council was established in 1968. There are now over 200 members on the North Shore, divided into a number of chapters. Activities include social events, educational programs, and fund raising.
