Dr. Gerald Rumsey Baker, nicknamed Paddy, trained in medicine at St. Bartholomew's Medical and Surgical Hospital in England. Baker worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Victoria, B.C., before establishing a medical practice in the Cariboo in 1912. Baker remained in Quesnel for forty-one years. Baker's wife, Nellie, assisted him in his practice and trained in anaesthesia at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver to assist in surgical procedures.
