History
Dr. Aguzzi-Barbagli was born in Arezzo, Italy in 1924. He received his Ph.D. in Italian and Latin Literature from the University of Florence in 1949. After lecturing at Vassar College in New York, he went on to obtain his Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia, New York. He then lectured at the University of Chicago from 1959-1964, eventually becoming an assistant professor. From 1964-1971, he was associate professor at Tulane University. He was first appointed as a professor at U.B.C. in 1971 where he taught Italian language, Italian literature, and comparative literature. He was very active in related professional organizations, and lectured and published widely. He received many awards and distinctions during his academic life. In retirement, Dr. Aguzzi-Barbagli researched the issue of the Italian presence in Canada and especially in British Columbia. He focussed much of his research on Leone Caetani, member of one of Italy's most prestigious families, who emigrated from Italy to Canada in 1921 and took up residence in Vernon, B.C. Dr. Agguzzi-Barbagli's primary research project was a translation to English of the autograph manuscript of Leone Caetani's 1891 travel diary. The manuscript was published after Dr Aguzzi-Barbagli's death in 1999. It was introduced, annotated, and edited by Dr. Hannibal S. Noce, colleague, friend and executor for the Aguzzi-Barbagli estate. The book was published by Schena Editore as #94 Cultura Straniera, Biblioteca della Ricerca, ISBN 88-8229-143-X.
