Name of creator
International Congress of Mathematicians (1974 : Vancouver, B.C.)
Biographical history
The first meeting of international mathematicians was held in 1893 as part of a scientific and cultural program organized in conjunction with Chicago's World Fair. Encouraged by the success of the gathering, the participants moved to establish a congress on a regular basis. The initial meeting of the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in Switzerland in 1897 and has become a quadrennial event since then. Successive congresses have provided an important forum for the information exchange which has helped shape mathematical knowledge. In 1974, the ICM was staged at the University of British Columbia.
Custodial history
The records were in the custody of Maurice Sion, chairman of the local arrangements committee.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence, programs, photographs, memorabilia and proceedings of the 1974 Congress. Also included in the fonds are some records of the Canadian Mathematical Congress, which served as official host for the event.
